Chicha started out in the late 60’s, in the cities of the Peruvian Amazon. Cumbias Amazonicas, as they were first known, were loosely inspired by Colombian cumbias. Chicha, named after a corn-based liquor favored by the Incas.
The islands of Guadeloupe and Martinique developed their own unique styles of music influenced by generations of immigrants and a strong french colonial presence. The scattering drums and soaring clarinets of biguine ruled the dancefloors on the islands in the 60s and 70s.
